Low Latency Video

Real-time video processing with latencies <100 µs: FPGAs have it covered.

A lot of video applications require low latency from glass to glass – that is from the sensor to the display. Examples are medical surgery robots, live streaming, or production lines. To showcase the speed and power of the FPGA technology, Enclustra has developed an ultra-low latency video demo, based on the Enclustra Mercury+ XU8 module.

The demo compares three variants of the same video pipeline: implemented with Software, High-Level-Synthesis (HLS) and VHDL. Running at 1920×1080 pixels @30 FPS, the FPGA-based solutions has a latency of <100 µs. The software solution reaches only 11 FPS and has a latency of 76 ms.

The software implementation uses 275% of the CPU load on the ARM Quad-Core Cortex-A53 in the Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC ZU7EV device. The FPGA variant only uses 0.5% – even using a Sobel filter with a 7×7 kernel instead of the smaller 3×3 kernel in software. The full potential of the FPGA can only be unleashed by an HDL/VHDL implementation: Optimized by the FPGA experts at Enclustra, it uses almost 4 times fewer FPGA resources than the HLS variant – while still providing the exact same performance.

And the best of all: Thanks to the modularity of the Enclustra portfolio, the development services team was able to port the demo in only one day of work to the brand new Andromeda XZU65 SoM.

Can't wait to see it life? Join us at Embedded World, booth 2-436 and connect with our experts.

Success Stories

Creating 3D City Maps at 300 km/h

Six 150 Megapixel Cameras in One Pod

The Leica CityMapper-2 generates 3D maps of cities in one run. Mounted on an airplane that flies at up to 300 km/h over the city, it records all data to generate accurate 3D data. Six 150 MP cameras and a LiDAR synchronized with the lowest possible jitter take an image every 0.9 seconds. The image data is stored to four SSDs on a host PC running Windows 10 – notably a non-real-time operating system.

The image data is transferred via a SLVS-EC (Scalable Low-Voltage Signaling with Embedded Clock) high-speed interface to an Enclustra Mercury+ XU8 SOM and temporarily stored in the SDRAM. Each sensor is connected to it's own SOM. The host PC then initiates the DMA engine of the Enclustra FPGA Manager PCIe IP Solution which transfers all the data through PCIe to the host PC without any further action from the host CPU, thus minimizing the CPU load.

Also integrated into the Enclustra Mercury+ XU8 SOM is a preview function. On a display the pilot or operator can check the image quality during the flight while the application is on mission and make sure the image data is collected correctly.Processing the data stream of almost 2 GBytes/swithout any frame drops is a very ambitious task.

If you would like to find out more about this exciting customer project, you can read the whole story .

We Help You Migrate Your Spartan-6 System

It's Time to Upgrade Your FPGA

Every system needs a refresh or an upgrade sometimes. Be it to add new features, enhance the system performance or because some parts aren't available anymore (or only with prohibitively long lead times). Upgrading from a Xilinx Spartan-6 to a modern FPGA like a Zynq-7000 device or a Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC with an integrated processing system is a chance to simplify the system and reduce the number of parts and PCB size. There is also the potential to lower power consumption and extend the life-cycle of the product.

But migrating to a new FPGA or SoC can also be complex and time-consuming: One needs to study a new chip architecture, deal with new development tools and migrate all existing code to the new toolchain. If an integrated processing system is used, one also has to take care of the board support package (BSP), the software build process and an operating system (for example Linux). All this know-how first needs to be built up, before the actual development might start.

With more than 17 years of FPGA system design experience , Enclustra can help you to jump-start your project. We do customer design projects at every stage of development, from conception through to bring-up at the customer site. Our expertise enables us to create the best experience for you. We pride ourselves on the quickest, highest possible quality of service and delivery from the moment you get in touch, to the moment your system starts up in the field for the first time. Be it an FPGA or SoC from Xilinx, Intel, Lattice, Efinix or Microchip:  We know them all blindfolded!

Get in contact and  tell us about your project.

Versatile Video Converter

Enclustra developed FPGA firmware for a multi-channel video converter in the context of a design service contract. Various processing steps are applied to each of the parallel video streams: scaling, vertical/horizontal flipping, color-space conversion, and frame-rate adaption. Additionally, on-screen displays (OSD) can be added to each stream.

The video streams are received in SDI format, on the output side SDI as well as streaming over Ethernet are implemented. For streaming, the data is compressed using the Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC VCU. A few years back, such a project would have been considered as a huge effort – today it can be realized with relatively low effort by utilizing some of Xilinx’s off-the-shelf IP as well as Enclustra’s internally developed video libraries.

If you would like to find out more about customer projects we did, you can find them here.

Get your embedded update at Embedded Computing Conference on June 1st 2021, 9:30 – 15:00 CET.

As every year, the Embedded Computing Conference imparts lots of know-how about embedded technology – directly targeting the industry. The only difference is that the conference now takes place virtually. This has the advantage that it is now even more efficient and accessible.

In its talk Enclustra presents how to simplify and speed the up development of FPGA based digital signal processing systems. Nowadays FPGAs often replace DSPs in industrial digital signal processing systems. Implementing digital signal processing with FPGAs used to be hard, because it had to be described with VHDL or Verilog. That’s why Enclustra developed a DSP Library for FPGA design. It enables you to assemble an entire digital signal processing system graphically in a very short time. The library includes FIR and CIC filters, CORDIC, function approximations, buffers and time-division multiplexing infrastructure, and supports both continuous-wave and pulse processing.

To further simplify and speed up development, the DSP Library also contains bit-true simulation models based on an open-source Python framework. This allows the exact functionality to be tested, simulated, and optimized with the full power and ease of Python.

We look forward to welcoming you on June 1st.

Balancing master
riser_risc-v-segway-robot-mars_ax3

The RISER (RISC-V Segway Robot) always gets back to its feet

The real acid test for a product comes – at the latest – when you use it yourself in a project. This is exactly what happened with the engineering company imt when it developed a trade fair demo in just four weeks. The idea of a self-balancing robot came to fruition quite quickly, with tried-and-tested procedures and the latest technologies and tools being used in the development of the idea.

A Mars AX3 FPGA module from FPGA specialists Enclustra serves as the basis for the robot. This module significantly reduced the amount of needed hardware development work, as only a very simple base board had to be developed with the power electronics and sensor systems. The detailed documentation, the VHDL reference design, the 3D CAD model and the PCB footprint – that are freely available for all Enclustra modules – helped to ensure that the PCB worked right away.

It took very little time to choose the system partition and the programming tool: With the DATAFLOW Studio, that is developed by imt, the implementation of the system was a breeze. The DATAFLOW Studio contains a RISC-V soft processor which takes care of control and regulation of the entire robot. All sensors and actuators were able to be quickly and simply connected to this high-performance open source processor via the FPGA logic.

The project was only able to be successfully carried out and the robot got up and running in such a short period of time by combining these technologies – and of course thanks to the extensive knowledge of the imt engineers.

Future-proof thanks to the modular approach

The modular approach taken by Enclustra in its FPGA and SoC modules demonstrated its advantages two-fold in a customer project – firstly, through an extremely short development time, and secondly, through the development of an application-specific base board that can also be used by the customer in future projects.

The base board for a Mercury+ XU8 module features the standard ports, such as 2x Gigabit Ethernet, 2x USB 3.0 and 1 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet, as well as the option of connecting four SSDs (2x SATA, 2x PCIe NVMe). In parallel to this, Enclustra has developed an additional card that can be plugged into the base board, featuring two space-rated Texas Instruments multi-gigabit transceivers, as well as SFP+ and LVDS I/Os. Although the additional card is a project-specific development, the base board will also be used in other customer projects.

In the next phase, Enclustra will develop the FPGA firmware and the embedded software, which will likewise be modularly divided into general infrastructure and application-specific functionality.

New prices as of October 2018

Enclustra will release its adjusted prices on October 1th, 2018. The reasons behind the price adjustments are the changing exchange rates as well as large investments to ensure an even better process and product quality.

Enclustra has exploited numerous options for cutting costs; however, some products are still facing a price increase in in the low, single-figure percentage range. Enclustra is taking care to ensure that the price adjustments are transparent and at the same time remain attractive for our customers in comparison with our competitors.

FPGA & SoC Modules

Remotely programming FPGAs

With the free Module Configuration Tool (MCT), every Enclustra product can be configured via USB and a graphical user interface – without the need for any additional special hardware. What’s more, the MCT will soon be even more universal. The MCT will soon support the Xilinx® XVC protocol, thus allowing for a hardware design to be easily debugged remotely using the Vivado® Hardware Manager. In addition, the MCT will be divided into an MCT server and an MCT client module. This will, for example, allow a module connected to another computer over a network to be managed using the well-established MCT GUI.
